The Newsday review
(Thank you, Barbara, for mentioning this. I found it and here it is.)
Jazz Without Fever Peggy Lee tunes and movie music don't always ignite By Gene Seymour STAFF WRITER June 25, 2003, 2:55 PM EDT One can't blame the JVC Jazz Festival for wanting to wrap its arms around the legacy of Peggy Lee, who made one of her last New York concert appearances at the 1995 JVC fest on the same Carnegie Hall stage as Monday's all-star tribute to the singer-songwriter-dramatist. But the breadth of that legacy seemed to tempt the show's producers toward lush, hothouse extravagance, both in its staging and in an eclectic guest list dominated by divas of all ages and backgrounds. Still, there were pleasant surprises, starting with Nancy Sinatra, whose opening rendition of "Why Don't You Do Right," Lee's star-making hit with Benny Goodman's band, swung with an air-tight confidence and command of rhythm that would have made her dad grin with pride. And, lest you forget the Variety reviewer, these were his words: Nancy Sinatra, in trademark boots under a long skirt, opened with a sassy take on "Why Don't You Do Right?", Lee's 1942 chart hit with the Benny Goodman band. It's looking like our little girl did better than a couple of pre-judging *******s would have us believe!

I won't get into politics on this forum, but I feel that the Times leans too far left, and therefore is not an objective paper. Same with LA Times. again, IMHO.

Have Mercy on those at Work!
"Daddy, walk with me. Don't let me go out there alone." and then I did my best"
Nancy, you made me CRY with that. And I'm a 45 year old man AT WORK! Dammit! Really, sounds like you did great to me! And "under rehearsed" is certainly much, much better than "can't sing" "spits on the first 3 rows when she sings" "has a body odor problem, combined with bad breath" "this lady is a tramp" "forgot to wear undies", etc. etc. Sounds like you done good, kiddo! Hang in there - Lonnie |

People who write critics...
...never went on stage to sing a song and if they would sing anything, they would get a very bad critic from another person who write critics. Dear Nancy, ignore them.
Love, Jerry

Things are improving!
Hollywood Reporter June 25
<<from "Why Don't You Do Right?" -- her (PLs) first hit with Benny Goodman, here delivered with the proper swagger by Nancy Sinatra >> <<Harry did later acquit herself with an entertaining duet with Sinatra on a medley of songs co-written by Lee for "The Lady and the Tramp." >> And the paying customers have spoken. If things keep going like this, Nancy will have to change into a cocktail dress to do "WDYDR" half way thru her live shows...

Re: Critics
Nancy has already said that she does care what critics think of her work. But not all critics are subjective in their writing. Some like to dip their pen in a little poison before putting it to paper. And some still like to attack THE NAME.
Nancy can hold her own against any recording artist out there today. And it isn't her last name. It's her God-given talent. We love ya, gal

Rick
I'm thinking about adding WDYDR to my shows in July. It's a fabulous song. An explanation of what happened to Deborah: At the rehearsals last Saturday, there were a lot of people waiting to try their songs with the rhythm section, some of whom had Broadway gigs (matinees) and couldn't stay long. BAD PLANNING. Debbie had a couple of run-throughs with the pianist and percussionist. If you know Peggy Lee's music then you are aware of the fact that "Lover" has blaring horns and is a complicated chart. One would think the powers that be would have allowed Debbie to do the song at sound check at Carnegie Hall, but no, there wasn't enough time. BAD PLANNING. NOT EVEN ONE run-through of Lover with the band. There was also no time for us to try our duets with the band. BAD PLANNING. Had we rehearsed we would have been told that the music director was cutting a verse from the Siamese Cat Song. Didn't rehearse. Didn't know. We knew it was going to be a train wreck but could do nothing but try to do our best with what we had. Critics shouldn't be expected to know all the behind-the-scenes details. All they are supposed to report about are the results they see and hear. But oh, my goodness, how Debbie begged and pleaded for a run-through of Lover. It was really very sad to see. I felt so bad for her. It all fell on deaf ears for they were more interested in running the overture than Lover or the duets. Petula Clark also got no run-through at sound check. My song had to be run because we changed the key and had to find out if the band could transpose on the spot. If not for that, I would have had no sound check either. BAD PLANNING. You can't put on a show of this scope without proper rehearsals. Any fool knows that. Even critics.

Critics and critics
Whilst we're beating up on "critics" here, we should note that most of them loved our girl at Carnegie Hall.
A couple didn't - what the hell? Different strokes! I wish I'd been there - but based on most of the critics and the reports from you members who saw her, I'd say Nancy's appearance at Carnegie Hall was a ripping success!

Add note from peggylee.com
This is Peggy Lee's fan site, and some of the members there posted their thoughts about the Carnegie Hall event.
Many of them just lambasted everyone, just because none of them actually was Peggy Lee herself. This is an understandable point of view for her dedicated fans. We probably wouldn't much care for a tribute to Nancy done by a bunch of other girl singers. They just wouldn't be her. Thing is - I found this note from a Peggy Lee fan who had obviously never heard Nancy sing - at least not since "Boots" came out. Dig it. A serious Peggy Lee fan is OK with our girl! << Nancy Sinatra is surprising talented ("Why Don't You Do Right?" and a "Lady And The Tramp" tribute). I never knew that she could sing so well. She should start touring.>> Out of the mouths of babes! Or maybe some grizzled old buzzard who just knows good singing when he hears it!

Added add note
The Peggy Lee website would probably also be a good place to keep an eye on for news of any upcoming broadcasts or recordings of this event.
We know Nancy will keep us posted - but she's going to be very busy in July, and we'd hate to miss anything! Here's the Peggy Lee website: http://www.peggylee.com

I don't suppose this performance will be made available to the gen pop by any chance?
I would sure like to capture the magic of that show (since I missed it live, on tape)......

Actually, Nancy
I was only half kidding about adding WDYDR to your shows: it's perfect. Very "Sugar". A fantastic song. Do it. (Hope you do the trademark NS thing on "Git outta here 'n' get me some money too"...)
Carnegie Hall sounds like a performer's worst nightmare - now I feel REALLY bad for you guys. No wonder you were praying when you went on. It really says a lot that you all were able to please the audience, and cover for the very people who you'd expect to cover for you! You must be furiously pissed and feeling sabotaged. Jeez - all of Peggy Lee's music is SO dependent on nuance - it can't be just slapped together without painstaking rehearsal. (Virtually everyone she ever worked with agrees that Miss Lee was no easy gig - nothing was ever left to chance. And nobody would know that better than Mike Renzi...) Peggy Lee's arrangement of "Lover" IS exceptionally complex (it was hell recording that, so much so that the first sessions were abandoned) and apart from the horns there's a couple of strange rhythmic changes which the chart doesn't really support...you'd need twenty run-thrus on that one to even get close to nailing it. Deborah must be devastated by her reviews. (Blondie will be here in a couple of months - can't wait!) Why don't somebody do right and round up "The Godesses" (Sinatra, Harry, Clark & Connor for starters) and do the whole thing as a musically flawless TV special?...mmmm! That would certainly deodorize the whole thing for posterity. Some good will come out of it...mark my words.
