Funny you should bump this. I really love this album. I remember the recording sessions vividly, as if they were yesterday. Chet McCracken is such a good drummer and this is when I met Keith!!

There was palpable energy as though we were part of an event and for me it was an event because I hadn't been in the studio for so long. And I had a LABEL! At least I thought I did. It wasn't until much later I found out how bogus it was. That's why I ended up having to do the Playboy pictorial.

So the label was already gone before the album was released?

In a way it was a new start for you after having been away for a while. Did it feel new to you? Had things changed a lot?

Keith is fine now after his horrible accident, still walking with a limp, but alive and well. Producer, Ray Ruff died a few years ago I'm sorry to say. His hopes were high for One More Time but he didn't have the money to support promotion and I only earned a certain amount from Playboy so the album died. It's a shame too because I think if more people had heard about it we could have pushed it over.

Ah, well...

It was financed by a group of Ray's friends in Texas and they just couldn't handle it in the long run. We really didn't have the money to press the CDs and do the booklet until Playboy came into the scenario.

Yes, things had changed radically, mostly in the studios with digital and all that. Insisting upon keeping it analog was a full time job but thankfully Ray Ruff brought Keith in who had been working in a studio here called Sonora. I have posted pictures from there. Keith was up on analog equipment and we managed to make it have the "Nancy" sound.

People wonder why my records are timeless and I think the answer lies in the recording and mixing processes. We do move to digital in the middle of it but the beginning and the end are analog. Sadly the places to record that way are few and getting fewer. I often wonder what I will do when I can't get my hands on a 24 trk tape machine anymore. I don't know what they cost.

Such a terrific album and you can feel the energy in every song! It should have been a big hit but it's hard to compete with the big record labels. I'm glad I discovered it!

Those analog machines create a certain sound that the new digital technology can't reproduce. That's great you still use them.

This ad doesn't give a price

Studio Magnetics AR2400 £990
This is a 24 track 2” analogue reel to reel multitrack recorder with remote control
Brilliant for recording rich warm tones onto 2” tape
The machine including the heads is in excellent condition and in full working order. It has been regularly serviced and was recently aligned .
I have had the machine for 5 years and It’s been used in my home studio only.
The buyer has to collect but I can arrange transport for a fee.

That's good to hear about Keith. I think I remember reading that about Ray or maybe you told me. I remember trying to find a phone number for Cougar at the time. I was trying to persuade them to release "Crocodile Tears" (I was a persistent bugger) and I think what I eventually got was Warlock Records which I think was the distributer. I'm not sure. That's how I found out about the remix of "Now I Have Everything." They even sent me a promo cd.

I had high hopes for the album too. I always wondered why there was no real promotion for the album other than what you seemed to be doing for yourself (and still do!). Now I know.

I think one of the main reasons your records are timeless is because you have a sound of your own. No one else could duplicate it if they tried. You have touched on pretty much every style of music, yet they all manage to have the "Nancy" sound. The voice is the one constant and it has only gotten better. Not many people can claim that.

The Nancy sound is a struggle to achieve. It involves the right mic, the right analog equipment as discussed above, the right sort of reverb (that's really difficult) and the right vocals, of course.

BTW the machine in the ad is a piece of

Well said, Richard! I'm listening to this album right now!
