Barbra Streisand

Is Barbra Streisand the best singer in the world? I'm not a huge Streisand fan; she's more my Dad's kinda thing, but I can't deny that she has one hell of a voice!! It truely is amazing, Streisand has a cosmic range which is just unbelievable and she is always so clear and in perfect pitch. My Dad has always listened to her, so I've grown up with her music and now I'm beginning to appreciate what amazing talent this woman really has. I saw her millennium show at The MGM Grand on TV and I was blown away by what she did that night, did anybody else here see that? What did you think?

What do you all think of Ms Streisand? Is she the very best there is?

well, i like sinatra, and i like sammy davis, and i like judy garland. this is why i would prefer liza minnelli as the last of that category today. she has more of that "old" feel, i don't know how to describe it. i couldn't compare streisand to those other performers.

streisand uses her voice differently. she hasn't got a strong "tremolo" or "vibrato" (?). that's why she kept her voice through the years. she produces high, "squeezed", bended notes.
and usually that sound is too "clean" (or clear) to me (oh it's hard to describe that).

but i enjoy her. i have the 1994 concert, and there are so many passages that are phenomenal. the soundtrack from "yentl" is extraordinary. listen to her live duet with her screen-self on that concert! i also like the pop hits she has done (enough is enough/w. donna summer, guilty/w. barry gibb, you don't send me flowers/w. neil diamond).

i would not say she's the best (celine dion, mariah carrey, whitney houston all followed her track, they use their voices similiarly; i tend to find that boring). streisand is one singer, minnelli the other singer. different.

BABS

I'm still waiting for her to leave the country now that Dubya is president. Come on, Babs, it's been over a year already! I'll gladly spring for your plane ticket, as well as Alec Baldwin's. Whaddya Say?

Eugene

PS: Politics aside, Babs is overrated, and the Chairman was right when he dissed "People." It's a candidate for the most excruciating popular song of the century.

Bab's Sister

Does anybody remember Roslyn Kind? She was a singer in the 1970s, but didn't make it. She is Streisand's sister. Another singer from the era, Jane Oliver is no longer heard from. Barabara Cook has a great voice. Minnie Ripperton died too young. Personally, I agree with Eugene, although there would be room on the plane for more. John

I believe I got it right

Steffen, I had remembered that in a conversation with a friend in New York many years ago. I hope it is accurate. I could find no mention on the web, although there is a recent album by Kind. Thanks, John

Barbra

This lady is so vey talented. I remember when she first began her career on Broadway. Not ony does she have an amazing voice and knows how to project it, but she is a talented actress and director.

Streisand?? Bleh! I don't like her and I probably never will. I suffered through her duet with Frank in "Duets" so I could hear the song, but I didn't like her at all! Just thinking about her makes me shudder! Bleh!

I love Streisand and could listen to her all day, although I must agree with Eugene. Just hearing the opening notes of "People" makes me run screaming from the room.

Half-Sisters

Barbra Streisand and Roslyn Kind share the same mother.

Kind's father is Streisand's stepfather.

Babs........Yuk

I will admit that I'm more offended with her nonsense surrounding her politics and the stupid things she has to say about it but, frankly, I never got into her musically. She obviously has a tremendous voice which she has never learned how to use. She comes close but I for one do not understand why people love "screamers".

I put Patti LaBelle on the same category. Celine Dion is on her way into this crowd too. Why can't they just sing with their wonderful vocal chords and leave the histrionics at the door.

Ella Fitzgerald is the single greatest female vocalist of all time. Hands down. She never did too much. She just sang the song while feeling the words. She knew what the lyricist was trying to say and was true to the words. Sinatra did this better than anybody.

Babs?.........more like BLABS>>>> Just one man's opinion.

Yes Voice, but what an intelligent man and what a brilliantly articulated opinion. Your post says it all. Thank you.

Eugene

PS: Mr. O, you're right, there is room on the plane for more. You want to pool our money together?

Her voice is powerful, but it does nothing for me. And to top that off she's not a very likable person in my view. I don't know why...Seems too confident that she's a good singer. Expects everyone to like her. I don't know...Maybe I'm just odd...

Melanie,

I always knew that you were a young lady of good musical taste (you love THE VOICE after all), but you totally confirmed it with your disdain of Barbra (aka THE EGO). I have watched many of her interviews to form an opinion of her and I feel that she is a horrible person. I have to give the devil her due because she has a good voice and a definite charisma when on stage that just draws you in. It's just that I find her style too schmaltzy for my taste. I also get tired of her cramming her political views down mine and everyone else's throats.

To everyone else,

Let me know where I need to send the check. I'll be glad to contribute to the pool. It will be money well spent!

Broadway

Has anyone heard either of Streisand’s 'Broadway' albums i.e: The Broadway Album, Back To Broadway; what do you think to them?
