I agree with your thought about the arrangements of Buddy Bregman Stanley. They are delightful. And beyond his work with Ella I know very little about him.

Re the song book series in general I also like that Ella often included the verse on these songs.

Larry --Bregman, a nephew of the legendary Jule Styne, wrote some wonderful arrangements for Joe Williams & The Basie Band; Sammy Davis, Jr. (His "Porgy & Bess" album with Carmen MacRae (arranged by Bregman) is superb); Anita O'Day; and, of all people, Jerry Lewis (The 'Jerry Lewis Just Sings!' album is terrific!), and I think he did five albums with The First Lady of Song!

I know he has a website, and it'll probably have some kind of discography. Enjoy! Enjoy!

Just bumping this thread in honour of Ella Fitzgerald's birthday on April 25th. Such an amazing talent, and thankfully there is an incredible musical legacy for us to enjoy.

Bumping for Ella just because I love her.

Would really like to hear any stories from those fortunate enough to have seen her perform or met her...

There is also a wonderful Verve album entitled "Bing Sings Whilst Bregman Swings".

In a movie with James Darren, she plays piano. So does he.

I wonder if it's them or a sound track.

It's the movie with Shelly Winters & Ricardo Montalban.

I didn't know that's what they call them but I like it!

Wonder if there has ever been a FS version - if not, December 2015 perhaps?

I'm not sure there's been a Google Doodle for Frank , Keith. I do remember seeing a thread titled " Franks' Google Logo" but on reading it again (it's an old thread from 2009)it's only wondering why there hasn't been one, and how to make a request to Google to get one.

You'd think he would be at the top of their list!

google doodle.

Trouble is, it just ain't her. It looks more like Nell Carter, who looks VERY different.
Ella had close-set eyes, not far apart ones. She tended physically more toward knocked knees, not bow-legs.
Google's doodle? Obviously done by a dumb white. Not a very good caricature at all by any stretch.

Hi John, I think your movie is "Let No Man Write My Epitaph" which produced an album by Ella of standards accompanied only by pianist Paul Smith. Before the CD era this album was a collectible. It was released on CD under a different title and is popularly priced, i.e. cheap.

I have often wondered about this movie. At one time (in my "yewt") it was shown often enough for me to know about it. But I haven't seen or heard of it in decades. Maybe this is one for TCM.

The soundtrack probably has little to do with the film but is one of Ms. Fitzgerald's great albums in my opinion. I bought it for my wife when we were dating.

There will never be the likes of Ella Fitzgerald again.

Larry
