Robert De Niro

Let's pay our respects to Robert De Niro. He was born on August 17, 1943 in NYC. Surprisingly, he has more Irish ancestry than Italian. His parents were painters. They met while taking painting classes and married, but when Robert reached two, they divorced. So Robert's mother ended up raising him. Robert still saw his father regularly though. Robert got the acting bug early on. At 10, he played the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. And at 13, his mother recognized his ability and enrolled him in NY's High School of Music and Art. Robert dropped out though and ended up roaming around the streets of Little Italy for a while with a street gang. He had a falling out with his father. His father went off to Paris for a couple of years, but Robert brought him back. Robert went back to his studies at the famed Stella Adler Conservatory and learned method acting under Lee Strasberg. At 16, he starred in a Chekov play. And he honed his craft in dinner theatres and theatre workshops and off-Broadway productions. He tried to break into movies, and finally in 1963, Brian De Palma cast him in the Wedding Party. The movie was released in 1969. That was the year Robert also appeared on Sesame Street. A few years later, he was in Greetings and Hi, Mom. And then came The Untouchables. And there have been many other wonderful movies as well - - Bang the Drum Slowly; Falling in Love; Mean Streets; The Fan; Analyze This; Analyze That; The Godfather Part II; Taxi Driver; New York, New York; Goodfellas; The Deer Hunter; Once Upon a Time in America; Awakenings; Meet the Parents; A Bronx Tale, etc. Robert De Niro is truly one of the very best!!!

The 27th Anniversary Gala of the NIAF

Paolo,

Yes, the NIAF honored Robert De Niro. He deserved it! And Sophia Loren was also there. They honored her too. In his opening remarks, De Niro said "I love Sophia Loren," and he blew un bacio to her! By the way, Loren is the first native of Italy to be inducted into the NIAF Italian American Hall of Fame. At the gala, Tony Bennett treated everyone to a song that was especially dedicated to Loren. And Ruth Buzzi, Doris Roberts, Yogi Berra, Deana Martin were among the many celebrity guests. As a member of the NIAF, I was invited, but I could not go. I do have NIAF News, one of the NIAF publications, and there is a whole article plus gorgeous pictures of this event. It's very nice. You should see this pictures!!

P.S. If I had a scanner for my computer, I would scan some of these pictures so you could see them. Unfortunately, I don't have the scanner. My computer is rather old now - - 1998. I'm searching for a newer and much better one.

I didn't see my favorite DeNiro movie mentioned - Casino. A great movie for those who love Las Vegas of the 70's. Great performances by DeNiro and Sharon Stone.

a great actor, love all his movies, i wish he would stick with the acting. i hope more actors , both on the right and left would remain apolitical and save their opinions for the ballot box like most americans.
