    Nancy's Tapes Discography

    As a result of the predominance of digital audio during the last twenty years, magnetic tape has fallen by the pop culture wayside. However, because analog audio tape still has its enthusiasts, and for the sake of historical perspective, Nancy's releases on various tape formats should be recognized.

    Section A: Reel-To-Reel (including AstroStereo Programs)
    Section B: 4-Track Cartridge
    Section C: 8-Track Cartridge
    Section D: PlayTape
    Section E: Compact Cassette

    Releases are presented as: Label Catalog# Title.

    Section A: Nancy's Reel-To-Reel Tapes

    Nancy's reel-to-reel tapes were manufactured and distributed for Reprise Records by Stereotape of Costa Mesa, CA. These 1/4-inch tapes (on 7-inch reels) were recorded in 4-track stereo at 7-and-1/2 ips. (inches per second).* Packaged in hard boxes (7-and-1/4" x 7-and-1/4"), they feature reproductions of the corresponding LP artwork. With the exceptions of Movin' With Nancy and Nancy's Greatest Hits, in comparison to their vinyl counterparts, the track lists for sides 1 and 2 on each Reprise reel-to-reel tape are transposed.

    Some of Nancy's Reprise recordings are included on American Airlines AstroStereo Music Programs reel-to-reel tapes. Each 4-track open reel tape features various artists and was produced as a continuous 3-hour program recorded at 3 and 3/4 ips. These in-flight tapes were changed each month and also sold for home use.

    Secton B: Nancy's 4-Track Tape Cartridges

    Developed by Earl Muntz, Muntz Stereo-Paks, aka 4-track cartridges, were designed to be played on the "Autostereo" in-car tape player. These infinite tape loops play at 3 and 3/4 ips., and, unlike the 8-track format, require manual switching between programs. These are Nancy's Reprise/Muntz releases which I have been able to locate, so far.

    Reprise/Muntz Stereo-Pak 10-366A Boots
    Reprise/Muntz Stereo-Pak 10-418A How Does That Grab You?

    Reprise/Muntz Stereo-Pak 4RA-6277 Movin' With Nancy
    Reprise/Muntz Stereo-Pak 4RA-6333 Nancy (aka Nancy: Twelve Ways)

    Muntz Mini-Paks were the first pop singles to be released in cartridge form. As an alternative to vinyl 45s and EPs, Mini-Paks hold up to four songs and are compatible with all 4-track players.

    Reprise/Muntz Mini-Pak 45-107KC In Our Time/Leave My Dog Alone

    Section C: Nancy's 8-Track Tape Cartridges

    Although the four data tracks of the Stereo-Paks had the potential for higher audio fidelity, they were eventually supplanted by the 8-track format.

    Section D: Nancy's PlayTapes

    Introduced by Frank Stanton and manufactured during the late 1960s, PlayTapes are self-winding, 2-track, mono cartridges. Each tape can hold up to twenty-four minutes of audio. Promoted as the ultimate in portable music for their time and the replacement for the transistor radio, they can be considered as the forerunner of the Walkman and the iPod.

    Reprise/PlayTape 0321 Boots: "I Move Around"/"These Boots Are Made For Walkin'"/"In My Room"/"Lies"*
    Reprise/PlayTape 0800 Nancy & Lee: "Some Velvet Morning"/"Jackson"/"Sundown Sundown"/"Summer Wine"*
    Reprise/PlayTape 0828 Movin' With Nancy: "Some Velvet Morning" (by Nancy & Lee) / "I Gotta Get Out Of This Town" / "Jackson" / "This Town"*
    Reprise/PlayTape 3560 Nancy and Lee: "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'"/"Elusive Dreams"/"Greenwich Village Folk Song Salesman"/"Storybook Children"/"Sundown, Sundown"/"Jackson"/"Some Velvet Morning"/"Ladybird"**
    Reprise/PlayTape 3586 Nancy [Twelve Ways]: "God Knows I Love You"/"Here We Go Again"/"My Dad (My Pa)"/"Light My Fire"/"Big Boss Man"/"My Mother's Eyes"/"I'm Just In Love"**

    PlayTapes were available in five color cartridges based on category:
    Red cartridges = 2 songs or a 45 RPM single;
    *Black cartridges = 4 songs or an EP;
    Blue cartridges = children's albums;
    **White cartridges = usually 8 songs;
    Gray cartridges = talk and educational material.

    Section E: Nancy's Cassette Tapes

    Cassette tapes had the greatest longevity of all of the tape formats, but its sales were eventually overtaken by Compact Discs during the early 1990s.

    Thumbs up Thanks for sharing!

    Great thread Andrew! Thank you for sharing. I love this kind of stuff. I use to have a Muntz 8 track quad in my 1968 Mustang when I was in high school. Great sound.

    Thanks, everyone! I think these tape formats are interesting. I'm still trying to find out if any of Nancy's recordings were released on Mini-8 folding 8-tracks. If anyone knows, please post the information. It looks like an unusual format.

    Nice article,
    Nancy Sinatra was one of the top sellers for PlayTape, But I find the Nancy & Lee long player is very rare and hard to come by.
    So, I thought I might just add this graphic.

    Feel free to copy and paste it in your PlayTape Section if you like and I will edit my post later.

    Thanks for posting the image, Mike. It's fun too see Nancy's album covers in various formats.

    It's interesting to note that, although the Nancy & Lee PlayTape #3560 contains eight songs, the cover art (above the image of Nancy and Lee) appears to list all eleven songs from the original album.

    On the forth generation tapes they used actual album art.
    Note, it also says stereo.
    But, no playtapes were ever made in stereo.
    Some of the tapes were recorded off stereo masters and the sound loss made them pretty bad.

    Try listening to Hendrix on PlayTape! It's all lost in the mono mix.

    Sometimes I think they just recorded One channel and half the intruments are missing!

    There were two versions of the vinyl LP cover for the U.S. release of Nancy & Lee, R(S) 6273. It would have been more logical if the version of the cover without the song list had been used for the PlayTape artwork.
