Comments on Show #4

Songs and quotes list has been added above for this week's show.

I really have to marvel at some of the clever editing. I especially like the rejoinder after Dean's French number: Dean's comment to Frank is on the album; Frank's little comeback is spliced in (followed by a rare but appropriate FS song).

"Little Green Apples" and its intro, plus the extended following intro to the Rod McKuen songs, are obviously from the 1969 TV special, Sinatra. However, the versions heard on today's show must have come from a rehearsal tape. They differ ever so slightly from the DVD video, as is apparent when played side by side.

the last half-hour of this episode, in particular, was awesome

melancholy...haunting...beautiful

As can be seen in the above listing, much of the material for this week's edition of The Chairman's Hour comes from the 1965 NBC-TV special, A Man And His Music (available on DVD).

In fact, through the magic of electronic editing, today's Sirius show corrects a 42-year-old mistake!

After singing "Without A Song" on TV, FS introduced the next song as being "by Rube Bloom and Johnny Mercer." That song was "Don't Worry 'Bout Me," but it was written by Rube Bloom and Ted Koehler. On today's show, we hear "Day In–Day Out" instead, and that makes Frank's introduction accurate.

Just a little educated guessing and detective work (i.e. listening), Mark. Mainly, I recognize where I've heard them before.

In some cases, I'm unfamiliar with the short quotes. (There was only one today which I couldn't identify—the intro to Cole Porter's "At Long Last Love.")

Incredible memory. Some I recognized, but couldn't place at all. The only one I could place at first hearing was 'Remember that?' from the 80th show.

Upon listening to the replay today, I realize that the NEXT following song, "Fools Rush In," was the only other FS recording of a Rube Bloom/Johnny Mercer collaboration. There is a wonderful logic behind these song selections.

I've been meaning to ask if Chuck Granata is the one responsible for putting these shows together?

(I wouldn't be surprised, since Chuck mentioned recently somewhere that he is partial to the gorgeous arrangements and sonics on Nice 'N' Easy, and we have had several cuts from that album in the last few shows, as well as Nancy's show.)

Whoever does these should get some credit on-air. Perhaps Frankie could record a closing tag voicer which mentions, "The Chairman's Hour was produced by ..." ?

A huge thank you to Mr. Pignone for selecting "You Go To My Head". I haven't heard that song in ages and I had somehow managed to forget how intoxicating it is. Perfect in every way!

This week's Chairman's Hour was the first to include pre-1950 recordings, and it was the best so far, in my opinion.

There is a marvelous contrast between the 1940–42 Dorsey material in the first half of the show and the 1981 NBC-TV broadcast of Sinatra: The Man And His Music (with the Count Basie Orchestra) in the second half.

My hat's off to Charles Pignone! (Perhaps he could join us here sometime?)
