I'm listening, Bob. I've heard most of the broadcasts and most of the FS songs already too. I wasn't sure about that radio song I Don't Know Why (I Just Do), so I was waiting for you to post the song list.

Is Anyone Listening to These??

Hi There Bonni!!

I know just what you mean. Whenever I turn on the computers, I log onto Siriusly Sinatra, through their banner on the our News Page and then I log into the Forum, all right here.

I park there as long as I can. Unfortunately, I get called away, quite often and know I'm missing such wonderful stuff As long as I'm at my desks/computers I can soak it in.

My heart skipped a beat when Wave came on, this session of THE CHAIRMANS HOUR < Love this.

The End of a Love Affair is playing. Some of the words are "I smoke a little too much and I drink a little too much. The tunes I request are not always the best but the ones where the trumpets blare."

I am now carried away...AGAIN I just marvel at this incredible voice and human being. A little word like "blare" and I'm gone. He does it to me every time.

Thanks again Nancy, Chuck, Bob and all concerned. I'm a certified listener!! You're all doing such a wonderful job. Just want you to know you are deeply appreciated and loved.

I feel like I have permanent goose bumps hangin' out here Nice, I like it, I like it.

Listening to Frank and "The Chairmen's Hour". He just sang "Try A Little Tenderness" along with Al Viola and then sang "Nancy With The Laughing Face". It doesn't get any better!!:clap

That was the real treat of the hour. Because it's unavailable commercially, I've transcribed the entire introduction in my song list above (song #12).

If you missed this one, you really should tune in for the reruns next Monday or Wednesday.

[Added:] In case anyone missed the connection (see here), the reference to Whittier, California was for President Nixon, and the "another Italian gentleman" comment was for President Andreotti.

That was a great version of Try A Little Tenderness, I really enjoyed it.

I got the connection with Nixon but not about the Italian President. I've been to the Nixon Presidental Library in Yorba Linda.

Mark: That's just my super powers. I hope it won't diminish my image if I tell you that:

I post a placeholder before the show, so that it may serve as a reminder and precede any discussion. I record the show and then edit my post with the full song listing after the show is complete.

I see... I do like the reminder... but it works best for me for the Sunday afternoon replay... listening while laying around mom's pool.

Me too, Mark. I'm just going to record it. My song listing may be delayed this week. Let's hope "Theme from New York, New York" is not one of the featured songs.

I've added the song lineup above. A lot of great music from guest stars this week.

As I'd hoped, no "New York, New York" (go Sox!), but FS did close on a baseball theme.

Radio 9/19/1945: Songs By Sinatra (CBS/Old Gold)
On CD: Sinatra Sings Rodgers & Hammerstein

"The ability to write a song that remains fresh and new over the years is not one that is given to many people. Dick Rodgers and Larry Hart had that ability. Many of their songs are still as new as tomorrow. So from 'Spring Is Here,' written in 1929, we bring you 'With A Song In My Heart'…"

  6. With A Song In My Heart (with The Vimms Vocalists)
Radio 12/11/1944: Frank Sinatra In Person (CBS/Vimms Vitamins)

  7. FS introduces Tommy Dorsey
Radio 10/24/1945: Songs By Sinatra (CBS/Old Gold)

"Well neighbors, we're still in New York, where the strangest things can happen. For example, I'm walking down Fifth Avenue last night, and out of an open doorway I hear a very familiar sound…"

Tommy Dorsey – I'm Getting Sentimental Over You (trombone solo)

"I stop short. This, I say, is no foghorn off New York harbor. This sounds like the trombone of that 'Sentimental Gentleman,' Tommy Dorsey, my old boss. As though drawn by a magnet, I turn into the doorway, walk down a flight of stairs, and the next thing I know, I'm in a huge restaurant. I pass table after table, and the music comes closer. All of a sudden, I spot him, surrounded by a thousand fans. It's the old master of the slush pump: Tommy Dorsey! My old boss. Haven't seen him since '43. 'Would he speak to me?' I said to myself. 'Would he be glad to see me?' I just had to find out. So I ups to him, and I says, 'Hi, Tommy!' And gee, he was so sweet. Why, he turned to me and said…"

Tommy Dorsey: "I knew you'd come crawlin' back one of these days." [laughter]

FS: "Ouch! Ah please, Mr. Dorsey, please. I want you to know that I have my own program now."
    TD: "You have?!?"
FS: "Yes, and what's more, you're on it, trombone and all!"

  8. Be Careful, It's My Heart
Radio 8/20/1942: The Treasury War Bond Show (NBC)
On CD: It's All So New

"Thank you, Tommy. Don't move out of the spotlight there, Pipers. Tell us about your tune for the night." [The Pied Pipers sing a short intro.] "Well, sing it then for Dorsey, our old bossy."

Radio 10/24/1945: Songs By Sinatra (CBS/Old Gold)

  10. FS introduces Axel Stordahl to Tommy Dorsey
Radio 10/24/1945: Songs By Sinatra (CBS/Old Gold)

"Swell, Pipers, and don't run away. From here on in, it's memory night with a lot of the music we did when we all worked for Tommy Dorsey. Say, Axel, I want YOU to meet Tommy Dorsey."

    TD: "Hello, Axel!"
Axel Stordahl: "Hi there, boss!" [laughter]
    FS: "Boss?"
AS: "I worked for this guy for seven years."
TD: "Axel, let me get a good look at you. Geez, what happened to your hair?"
AS: "Seven years with Dorsey. Are you kiddin'?" [laughter]
FS: "Ha, ha. Axel! Please, he's our guest."
TD: "I'll fracture him! But I'm only fooling, Axel. You developed into one of America's fine arrangers and conductors, and it does my heart good."
FS: "The Sentimental Gentleman is getting sentimental. Axel, let's do him that Sy Oliver arrangement that I kicked around when we were both punching the Dorsey timeclock."

  11. Without A Song
Radio 10/24/1945: Songs By Sinatra (CBS/Old Gold)
On CD: The Columbia Years: The V-Discs

  12. FS and Tommy Dorsey joke about old times (with song medley)
Radio 10/24/1945: Songs By Sinatra (CBS/Old Gold)

FS: "Well Thomas, do you think I'm singing any better than I did when I worked for the band?"
TD: "Infinitely better, Frankie, infinitely better. You've reached the stage of absolute perfection. Uh, how about my work? Think I'm playing any better?"
FS: "Infinitely better, Tommy! You've reached the stage of absolute perfection."
FS & TD in unison: "Aren't we a couple of liars?" [laughter]
FS: "Ah, but no kiddin', Tommy. We had three swell years together, didn't we? And plenty of laughs."
    TD: "That we did!"
FS: "You were always the practical joker, the cut-up. Remember that night back in 1943 when I was having dinner in my room in a fancy hotel, and you had the waiter deliver me a can of garbage? Hmmm?" [laughter]
TD: "Oh brother! What a sweet gag that was."
FS: "It was a big yuck alright. And if I hadn't been so afraid to lose a perfectly good EIGHT-dollar-a-week job, why, I'd a knocked your block off!"
TD: "Oh yeah? You and who else?"
FS: "Well, all those guys who had a piece of me back in 1943." [laughter]
TD: "Well really, Frank, you were the practical joker of the band. I remember how you used to hide inside my trombone when I started my theme song. You'd stick your head out and give me a big raspberry."
FS: "Oh, it's not true. Yeah, they were really wonderful carefree years, Tommy."
TD: "Jam sessions into the wee hours of the morning."
FS: "All night sessions making records."
TD: "We were kinda lucky on some of those platters, Frank, weren't we?"
FS: "Yeah, I guess a few of them sold pretty well at that. Anyway, I bought 'em." [laughter] "In fact, I bought a copy of every record the Dorsey group ever made."
TD: "You were a good, sensible boy, Frank. You invest your money so wisely!"
FS: "Tom, of all those records we cut in the old days, which is your favorite?"
TD: "Well, naturally, I can't stand trombone solos. I'm partial to the kind of thing The Pied Pipers used to turn out."
FS: "By the way, Mack, when the Pipers worked for you, were they on salary?"
TD: "Please, Frank! The Pipers never thought about money. They worked for the pure joy of singing with a good orchestra." [laughter]
FS: "Pure joy, Thomas? That is pure hooey. Hmmm?"
TD: "Oh, with such idealism behind their work, 'tis little wonder the Pipers made such great hits as…"

The Pied Pipers – Somebody Loves Me (brief chorus)

FS: "Long about that time, Mr. Dorsey, I was spending my Saturday nights hitting you up for a raise and rinsing out my little things in the hotel bath tubs. While you and your trombone were spinning 'round and 'round on a million phonographs, somethin' like this…"

    Tommy Dorsey – (trombone solo)

FS: "You know, occasionally Mr. Dorsey here would work himself into a generous mood and arrange a record date where the band would play real soft, with permission granted me to sing above a whisper…"

    This Love Of Mine

FS: "If anybody cares, I wrote this song."
    TD: "You and who else?"
    FS: "Hank Sanicola, who else."

TD: "Frank, do you remember the record the Pipers made? The tune where you had the one line?"
FS: "How can I forget it? Sing it out kids."

  13. Oh! Look At Me Now (with Connie Haines & The Pied Pipers)
Victor (studio recording) 1941: The Essential Frank Sinatra With The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra

  14. The Pied Pipers – Oh! Look At Me Now (intro chorus only)
Radio 10/24/1945: Songs By Sinatra (CBS/Old Gold)

FS [exaggerated voice]: "I'm a lover!" [audience bobbysoxer screams] "Oh, that was much bigger in Shamokin, when we did it there."

FS: "Y'know, I've never made a survey to prove this point, but my point is: Here's a little Dorsey ditty that's worn out a few phonograph needles."

  15. Marie (with Tommy Dorsey band chorus)
Radio 6/12/1940: Carnival de Broadway (NBC; from the Astor Hotel, New York City)
    On CD: Learn To Croon

FS: "Cool as a cucumber in northern Siberia. And say, remember how those Pied Pipers rang the bell—and the cash register—in Ye Olde Corner Record Shoppe with this here one…"

  16. The Pied Pipers – What Can I Say After I Say I'm Sorry? (one chorus)
Radio 10/24/1945: Songs By Sinatra (CBS/Old Gold)

    FS: "Ow!"
TD: "And Frank, while we're checking our memory book for memories of the old days, let's don't forget the number YOU did with the Pipers."
FS: "Well, that might possibly be the one that says…"

  17. There Are Such Things (with The Pied Pipers)
Victor (studio recording) 1942: The Essential Frank Sinatra With The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra

FS: "Gee you know, with all those big record hits, it slowly begins to dawn on me that the Pipers and I were mighty, mighty lucky to have worked for the great Tommy Dorsey for three years—at eight bucks a week." [laughter]
TD: "Makes it sound like three years on a Dorsey chain gang."
FS: "But naturally, there were many compensations. Honestly, there were. For one thing, I always got a big kick and the pleasure of satisfaction whenever the Dorsey trombone would go front and center and slide into…"

  18. Tommy Dorsey – (trombone solo)

FS: "And Tommy, I'd like to thank you for the time you let me record this one. I'm giving Bing a dozen of these for Christmas…"
TD: "You'll get 'em back for Easter."
    FS: "Ouch!"

  19. Everything Happens To Me
Victor (studio recording) 1942: The Essential Frank Sinatra With The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra

FS: "Believe me, it's G-R-E-T, great, to live over the old days with Tommy Dorsey. But if I've given the impression that it was one happy-go-lucky interlude in life, unh unh, it wasn't. Many a moment was not as sunny as apple honey. You know, frequently the old man would get so fed up with our pranks and our mistakes that he exploded for miles around. But I knew how to calm him down, I did. Yessir, I'd walk right up to him and look him straight in the eye and say…"

  20. When You're Smiling (The Whole World Smiles With You)
Columbia (studio recording) 1950: Swing And Dance With Frank Sinatra

    FS: "Say, uh, Tommy."
TD: "What is it, Franklin my lad?"
FS: "Uh, how do you feel at this minute, old man? Strong, virile, all vinegared up?"
TD: "I feel, heh, as mighty as the mightly Stordahl. Why?"
FS: "Well, we've been pouring memory stuff here tonight, so I thought we might sort of put a head on it."
TD: "Elaborate, buster. What's the deal?"
FS: "A little production finish: Dorsey, the master, and his former slaves, The Pied Pipers and the undersigned, and here we go…"

Really enjoyed today's show... I like hearing these old time radio shows. There were some great songs on the radio program with Frank, Tommy Dorsey and the Pied Pipers, some great ones like: With A Song In My Heart, With Out A Song, There Are Such Things, Everything Happens To Me, I'll Never Smile Again, Just As Though You Were Here. Also, I really enjoyed the chatter between Frank and Tommy. Great show today!

I really enjoyed this week's show also. A little something different...

Most of the dialogue and some of the songs originated from the CBS Songs By Sinatra program (aka "The Old Gold Show") of October 24, 1945, during which Tommy Dorsey was Frank's guest. The 1945 broadcast was but 30 minutes in length, so the original program has been supplemented with various other radio airchecks and studio recordings to fill out the length of The Chairman's Hour.

I'll be posting my usual song listing above shortly. Because the original program is not available in an authorized release, this will include a written transcript of most of the spoken dialogue.

I encourage everyone to try to hear this in the reruns Monday and Wednesday. If you don't subscribe to Sirius, this would be a good reason to sign up. It's a real treat.
