I thoroughly enjoyed Tony Danza's show from start to finish... JS should listen to it ad nauseum to see how it's done...

My favorite part was when Tony said he was on TV at the time, and talking to his mother on the phone, and mom said 'Bigshot. You ain't nothin' until you introduce me to Sinatra.' And he did. Laughed out loud at that one.

Heard the last few minutes of Julius LaRosa's "Playing Favorites" a few days ago. I enjoyed him and his choices very much. He's a fine singer, too, with a style of his own that is, like that of many others, influenced by Frank Sinatra.

Suggested Guests for "Playing Favorites"

Dear Nancy & Company:

The "Playing Favories" concept is marvelous. When I was with WABC-FM many moons ago, we had a one hour program in which a celebrity guest brought the records/songs that had special meaning to them. Among the guests was Eli Wallach, who brought along "This Is Sinatra," and requested "From Here To Eternity." Eli, still going strong in his 90's, is a great Sinatra fan, and there's a legendary "connection" linking him, FS & the film.

Some suggested guest hosts:
Steve & Eydie
Vic Damone
Marilyn & Alan Bergman
George Shearing
Pete Hamill
William Kennedy ("Ironweed" author)
Tony Curtis

"Playing Favorites" is another reason why Siriusly Sinatra is Something Special!

If such is available, a list of all the hosts of "Playing Favorites" so far including a listing of the recordings they played, would be great.

Ooops, I see that Bob has it there in Post #1.

In Boston, even BEANS do it (right Bob?)

Since no one else has commented on this terrific show by Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. . . . and since Sirius Radio's live 'scroll' mis-spells Marilyn McCoo's name -- BOTH her first name, and her last, if you can imagine! [Can someone at Sirius kindly correct that? It's an unintended insult, I'm sure, but insulting nonetheless, especially to guys like me who have adored Marilyn since the 1970s!!]

I loved it when Marilyn after praising Frank Sinatra's incomparable greatness, singled out Ella Fitzgerald for special appreciation, among other great singers who loved Frank.

"I had the honor," said Marilyn, "of meeting Ella and she told me, 'I love YOUR voice!'" (and what a thrill that was for Marilyn to hear!)

This, by way of introducing a 'live' show recording of Ella singing Cole Porter's "Let's Do It!" -- the wittiest song about sex ever written, (excepting, maybe, "Makin' Whoopee"). I'd never heard this recording of Ella's, (and wondered if that was her musical director of many years, Paul T. Smith at the piano?)

Anyway, thank's Billy & Marilyn for playing the best rendition of "Let's Do It," -- Ella flirting perfectly with an adoring audience. (Was this from the same show, I wonder, where Ella praised Frank as her favorite singer? I'm still looking for that one!)

Just before this, Marilyn McCoo talked about Frank Sinatra's wonderful reading of one of the best songs "written for him by Marilyn & Alan Bergman with Michel Legrand" -- 'HOW DO YOU KEEP THE MUSIC PLAYING?'

I'm so happy they shared with listeners their own lovely rendition of that song, from their own "latest CD, 'The Many Faces of Love." Both singers are in fine voice -- and I swear I heard Marilyn smiling that amazing smile of hers!

This was one of my favorite "Playing Favorites" shows and I hope it's repeated later in the year. (And thanks again to Bob in Boston for everything -- including correct spelling of names!)

Nope, I believe that's Jimmy Jones. This live cut is from The Stockholm Concert, 1966 with Duke Ellington (although Ellington plays piano on just two of his own songs).

You may be thinking of Ella in Berlin (1960, with Paul Smith Quartet), where she sings "The Lady Is A Tramp" and references FS: "For Frank Sinatra, I'd whistle and stamp... Thank you, thank you, Frank Sinatra fans!"

Liza's Exquisite Taste

I am eagerly looking forward to Liza's "Playing Favorites," more so than many of the previous editions. The primary reason is her unique musical taste. Whenever Eunice & I have seen her, she has always done & attempted the unexpected in terms of song selection, arrangements & orchestration. It will be fascinating to hear her FS "favorites" (of course, since I'm building this up in my mind, she'll "probably" go with "My Way," "That's Life," "NY,NY," "Strangers In The Night" -- all the "anthems.").

Those are wonderful songs and FS performances, but I'm expecting (or wishing) to hear such things as: "The Gal That Got Away," the fabulous combo of "The Gal That Got Away" & "It Never Entered My Mind," "Ill Wind," " I Wish I Were In Love Again," "How About You?," perhaps Judy's version of "The Man That Got Away," and FS & Judy's versions of "But Not For Me." If she doesn't play " To Love And Be Loved" from "Some Came Running," directed by her Dad -- I'll eat the proverbial chapeau!!

No matter the choices, this will be a very special edition of "Playing Favorites."

The "last to arrive" (but "better late than never")

I’ve always been aware of who Liza Minnelli is: namely, “Judy Garland’s daughter,” (or as younger sub-generations would say, “Judy Garland – she was Liza Minnelli’s Mom!”)

What else did I know about Liza? Well, only in recent years, I learned that Frank Sinatra “stole” one of his signature tunes (Theme from) “NEW YORK, NEW YORK” from Liza (as FS good-naturedly acknowledged, when introducing the song at late-in-life concerts).

Also, only after I wrote a review at Amazon.com for the single-CD “Sinatra in Vegas,” I learned (a little late in life!) that -- before Frank performed “Maybe This Time,” it had been Liza’s song.

And a thread here at sinatrafamily.com informed me that Liza did a late-in-life concert-tour with Frank (filling in after Dean Martin was taken ill, if I remember correctly).

Other than that . . . what did I really know about Liza? Other than her “unlucky in love” type segments on programs like Entertainment Tonight.

I thought of that on the drive in to work this morning – pulling up in swirling snow and unable to pull the key out of the ignition because Liza was introducing me to other songs I’d never heard before (but wished I had!)

From a time (apparently) when composers like David Rose and Leroy Anderson were writing songs like “Holiday for Strings” and “Fiddle Faddle” came a song from an MGM musical (introduced by someone Liza said was “MGM’s Secret Weapon” – I didn’t catch the woman’s name).

The song Liza played – her version with a stringed orchestra and a male chorus was . . . what can I say? It’s a total delight for someone like me! I loved such songs when I was (believe it or not) only 2-and-one-half-years-old (when I told my mother “Leroy Anderson is the best composer!” after hearing 78 rpm records of Anderson’s best work “The Typewriter Song,” “Sleigh Ride,” “Blue Tango” and . . . one of the greatest waltz tunes ever written, “Belle of the Ball” (you’d know it the moment you hear it!)

Anyway here’s Liza introducing me to “I Love a Violin.” (“Is it you I’m in love with? Or the violin?”)

Followed immediately by a recollection before introducing Frank’s first hit from Marilyn & Alan Bergman (before they were married).

“Frank had a home in Palm Springs,” said Liza, “and guest houses – each of which had a doormat, with the title of one of Frank’s songs! The one I loved (most) was “Nice ‘N’ Easy.”

Then, without fanfare, Liza introduced a song that must truly belong to her, saying, “Sometimes a song really expresses you – who you are.”

The song opens with a question, along the lines of, Why do you ask, ‘Where have you been, so long?’ (when) I’ve been right here, living my life in song!

It’s a long and beautifully-deceptively simple lyric, set to a worthy, memorable tune: and a few lines (from memory imperfect) went straight to my own heart; words like,

. . . the smoke has cleared, and ‘Look who’s here?’ . . . the same damn Dame you’ve always known! . . . I never left! (and) I would never leave you alone!

Anyway, just had to come and sheepishly admit I was the last to arrive at Liza's "party." But as Bob in Boston would say, "better late than never“ (thanks for this thread Bob)

Great show, Liza Minnelli. So nice to get to know you, and your great taste in songs. (In your bloodlines, right?) Yes, a little late in life to be won over by your talents . . . but then I didn’t “discover” Frank Sinatra until about 1992 – when I wrote him a note, which won me an immediate response. Hope you read this thread, and feel the love!

The only way Liza could have walked over the name of the guest house is if she were climbing the walls. The names were on plaques not doormats.
