They just played my new "favorite Sinatra song" I'd not heard!
About ten minutes ago just before 6:00 p.m. Central Time, Siriusly Sinatra played my "new favorite Sinatra song" I've never heard before!
I should say "my new favorite arrangement" of "One For My Baby." Help Bob! I gotta get me this one! After a long, spoken introduction before a 'live' audience, and a drawn out introduction by Bill Miller (longer than I ever heard before -- I imagine Frank sipping a drink or lighting a cigarette during the interval, and love the way Bill could keep vamping indefinately; but the moment Frank begins singing, "Quarter to three . . . " Bill is there with those classic notes from the 1958 studio recording, and the audience bursts into applause of recognition. Then, after one chorus of Bill and Frank alone together, I couldn't believe my ears! I get goose bumps thinking about it now, a few minutes later: A full string section begins to play a 'brand new' (to my ears) arrangement -- not at all like the classic original by Nelson; no, this one actually sounds MUCH more like Gordon Jenkins . . . but with delicate new touches, accents, amid the Jenkins-style 'unison' violin-lines. Please, Bob: Tell me the "Where? When? Who?" of my new favorite Sinatra song! [Thanks as well, to Channel 75 (Jersey Lou?) for playing this one] Last edited by Mark Blackburn; 02-20-2009 at 03:15 PM. Mark, from your description the only version of One For My Baby that comes to mind is from the The Royal Festival Hall DVD. On that version Frank uses the Gordon Jenkins arrangement, which includes a prominent string section.

Thanks, Allen . . . and one more question for you!
Belated thanks, Allen, for confirming the "when, where and who?" Gordon Jenkins -- that's who it sounded like!
Can you tell me who did the sublime arrangement for Frank's hauntingly beautiful rendition of the (French) song, "If You Go Away." I heard that on Channel 75 on the drive in to work today, and at first I wondered to myself, is that one of the obscure Claus Ogerman arrangements? Then I thought, "No -- that harp -- so beautiful, like raindrops falling -- that's Don Costa!" Thanks in advance for your knowledgeable reply, Allen! |

Mark, you answered your own question, "If You Go Away" was indeed arranged by Don Costa. It was recorded on February 20, 1969 to be included on the "My Way" album.
FS really gets into the basement here with those low notes!

Playing Favorites update
As you listen to the John Turturro Playing Favorites show this week, you'll notice a slight change as we play two versions of "Witchcraft" back to back...by Ella and by Frank. We moved some things around within to fit it into the show but it makes for a nice set, at John's suggestion.
Do check out the show.....and listen for some wonderful shows coming up with Leslie Uggams, Richard Carpenter and the Bergmans in coming weeks. |

Looking forward Lou. Thanks for the updates. The Richard Carpenter one sounds like it's going to be great. You do such an amazing job on these shows. They are always fantastic. If I may suggest once again if we can get Neil Diamond to do a show, that would be the icing on the cake for me. Neil covered a few FS numbers on a couple of his albums and He has such a great speaking voice that it would be an amazing show.
Thanks again Lou. |

He's a great musician.
Karen's version of Little Girl Blue must be difficult for him to listen to.

I'm listening now. This is a great show!
I think this is one of the best "Playing Favorites"; Richard did such a good job. I loved his song selections and how informative he was between songs. (Nice to hear some extra material by Johnny Mercer in there.)

I caught most of this yesterday. We had Seriously Sinatra playing all day at my store. Wonderful selections ! And thanks for the tracklist. I didn't realize FS was conducting on the Peggy lee track.
