I just love that Carly Simon played three different versions of Rodgers and Hart's "Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered" back-to-back. The lyrics Ella sang are a kick.

FS must have been one version, but who was the third? Did Carley ever record it? I've always thought she had beautiful voice.

It's in the song listing, Greg: Frank (Reprise version), Ella, and Carly; all different treatments.
This was also the first time I've heard Otis Redding on Siriusly Sinatra. Interesting juxtaposition with Frank's Columbia version of "Try A Little Tenderness." |

A girl with a Tennessee twang . . .
I turned on Channel 75 this morning and immediately heard an unmistakable 'Tennessee twang' (I have friends there) in a lovely female voice saying:
"Lorrie Morgan here, 'playing favorites' on Siriusly Sinatra. One thing I loved about Frank -- listening to some of his 'live' performances -- he always gave credit to the writers and the arrangers. And this is a song I've heard him do . . . and a song I had the opportunity of recording, on my SECRET LOVE album . . . a great old Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke song, arranged by Gordon Jenkins. Here is Frank's "Here's That Rainy Day." As I enjoyed that "live in Vegas" (with full stringed orchestra) rendition of my favorite Burke/Van Heusen tune, I recalled that one of my favorite duets is the one of Frank and Lorrie as they intertwined a made-for-each-other medley of "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" and "My Funny Valentine." Just checked the on-line Wiki(encyclo)pedia entry for Ms Morgan and sure enough -- born in Nashville! Another beautiful singer whose speaking voice is lovely too. Her bio describes a "turbulent" career, and I detected a a hint of 'hurt' blended with contentment when Lorrie Morgan introduced Frank's MY WAY: "I think it's a song everybody wishes could be their (own) 'theme song' -- I know I do! I think a lot of times it HAS been my theme song . . . and to close today I want to hear Frank sing this one -- one of his 'signature' songs." Just had to come here and say, "wonderful show by a terrific singer in her own right." From a fan in the frozen North |

Just a reminder to anyone who may have forgotten: Herb Alpert and Lani Hall on now. They just made my evening by playing Ella's "How High The Moon?" from the Berlin concert.
[Added:] And they just played a cut from another favorite album of mine: Nancy Wilson's LP with Cannonball Adderley. This show gets my vote! |
