Today marks the 64th anniversary of the passing of Babe Ruth, only player to winn 100 or more games pitching and hit 700 or more home runs. Fantastic deeds to this day are ofter referred to as "Ruthian," which says a lot about this great.

My nickname growing up was "Babe". I wore number 3 on my little league uniform because of him. I studied and read everything I could on the man. Of course in the late 60's and early 70's books about him were heavily sanitized so we really weren't told of his "appetites" until later.

August 16th is a rather interesting day for famous deaths. Elvis died on this date in 1977. We also lost Bela Lugosi, Amanda Blake, Admiral Halsey, and Bobby Thomson of the "shot heard 'round the world" fame.

Why do I know these things? I don't really know but I try to avoid big decisions on August 16th every year.

It may be more than numerological, perhaps the particular stage of the season, just a month past summer's peak.
The most beautiful woman in my world passed a month prior to the winter solstice. She always made perfect sense.

My stupid father strove to suffer throughout the winter, then croaked just prior to spring. Go figure.
