I spent way too much time watching The Pyramid back in the day.

The world's oldest teenager will be missed.

One of the best TV personalities in history. What a tremendous man, how sad.
Rest in peace, Mr. Clark.

Back in 1954, Bob Horn started the local Philly dance show "American Bandstand". In 1957, Dick took it over and went national with it. Those were exciting times, because the studio was in a building in an inner urban neighborhood right by the El train. In 1964, WFIL TV moved out of the inner city and Dick took Bandstand to L.A., whereafter it was broadcast once weekly instead of the MTWTF daily it had been for a decade in Philly.

Like Ace says, it was a different time - one of more cohesion. Variety shows appealed to everyone, and excessive diversification hadn't de-centralized the common base of the public repertoire yet.

Dick represents a bygone era of hosting; in a different but parallel way, to guys like Jack Benny and Ed Sullivan.

Imagine the records he is turning now...and the dances...and the laughter. We will miss you, Dick. Philly always called you its son. Now may the sun shine on you! May you continue to rock around the clock!
