Hal David

Hal David, longtime collaborator of Burt Bacharach has died at 91.

Most famous for Magic Moments for Perry Como and Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head he wrote a ton of other good songs, Alfie, We Have All the Time in the World and so on. A heck of a variation in hits.

I believe he also wrote Close to You which Frank covered.

My heart is aching from this news. He was a wonderful, talented, generous man and I loved him dearly.

Imagine viewing the trends in pop music over the last three scores of years from Mr. David's vantage point.

Remembering more structured standards and watching them deteriorate over the years with the increase of free-form unintelligible lyric, the over-use of vulgarity in rebellion (rebellion should be standing firm, not letting go), and the reduction in melodic structure to three chord riffs.

This man may well have felt some responsibility in trying to keep some intelligible, respectably structured material out there amidst the sea of banality, much like Frank did.

I was at an open mic (or is it mike), where some emaciated kid (white) without a shirt got up and started verbally abusing his audience with rhyming rap all in one note, while some idiot backup karaoke machine sounded like a washing machine. After five minutes of this, they clapped. I asked why. They said because he did it from memory without cue cards. But that ain't music. I was glad he wasn't my kid.

Rest in peace Mr. David.
