The last original one. A number of groups are an enterprise with a name, and their members change. Sometimes, like the Duprees, they can maintain the sound. But with the Platters, as with a few other groups, the sound changed as the group changed. The Dells come to mind with two recordings of "Oh What a Night". In '59 the lead was Johnny Funches, a tenor. In "69 the lead was Johnny Carter, a baritone (the remake "unto the old, unto the new"). Both of them are gone as well.
Herb is another original doowopper who has slipped away.

A wonderful guy who will be greatly missed! We saw him early in the year at a Bowzer Doo Wopp concert at the Mohegan Sun! Here's my Herb Reed story...
...We moved to Westboro, Mass. in September of '73. Our townhouse apartment (We loved it!) was in a complex called Windsor Ridge, located off Route 9 between Framingham & Worcester. The second day we were there, I saw a huge recreational-type vehicle parked in front of an apartment. There, on the side of the vehicle, were huge letters -- Herb Reed & The Platters! Sure enough, Herb & his family lived in Windsor Ridge, and used the vehicle to travel to The Platters' performing venues. I met him a number of times over the five years we lived in Westboro, and he & his family couldn't be nicer! Rest In Peace, Herb! You and your group made beautiful music together!

John, we were discussing that very same subject last night. When we saw The Platters at the Sun in January, they were wonderful, of course! I believe Sonny Turner (I know it was one of the very talented Turners) was singing the Tony Williams lead. When he hit those final notes from "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," he was terrific; but we all agreed that he just didn't recreate that iconic Tony Williams sound! It's never easy following in the footsteps of a legend!
Happy Father's Day to all!
