He was very special. His art was as exciting & colorful as the sports subjects he brought to vivid life! I had a great conversation (how I wish I had a tape recorder going) with Mr. Neiman, when he had an office/gallery in the Alladin (I could be wrong) Hotel. We discussed everything in about an hour -- Playboy Mag, Hef, Ali, Eddie Arcaro, Frank, Benny Goodman, Arnold Palmer, Archie Moore, modern art, the Renaissance, Museums -- Eunice gave me "that look," which means, "Stanley, you're monopolizing Mr. Nieman's time...maybe he'd like to schmooze with potential customers who have the money to purchase his paintings!"

A great artist, and a "mensch & a half!"
Rest In Peace, Mr. Nieman, your life was a masterpiece!

One spring day, a friend and I stopped in at a flea market to pass the time. I saw a painting of two Americas Cup sailboats painted on a nautical chart. The frame was ratty, but I already had a watercolor of a similar subject, also on a nautical chart, and thought this would make a nice partner. When I saw the date on the painting was the same as my birthday, the decision was final. I also noticed the signature in the lower right corner, but said nothing.

The seller asked $25, my friend said, "Give him 15," and the seller said, "sold!"

When we got it home, we found we had purchased a Neiman serigraph.

His paintings are usually wildly colorful, but this one is nicely muted and, after replacing the frame and mat, occupies a place of honor in my living room. Sorry to hear that he has passed away.

I'd only heard of the name in conjunction with a downtown San Francisco Department store, a pricey one at that. In the late eighties, some dramatic suicidist took the escalators to Neiman-Marcus's fifth floor balcony, and jumped off, to the horror and shock of scads of conventional dullards, including moms and babies in strollers. Too bad Herb Caen didn't have a field day with that one.

He was a very nice man. Here are a few pictures of the two of us from a party in New York celebrating my Playboy pictorial. He was very dear to show up and be supportive.

I'll miss you, Leroy.

It was only a few minutes ago that I received the sad news of Mr. Neiman's passing, and I really think his work was quite good - even, dare I say, brilliant.

I never had the chance to meet him, but I do appreciate his work.

Rest well, Leroy Neiman, for you have earned it.

Nancy, thanks for posting that beautiful invitation! Lots of memories attached to a number of those names on the list! Just to touch on a few of them...
...Branca has parlayed that one errant pitch (as well as being a good sport, & a terrific guy!) into a wonderful post-baseball career; it's great to see him still so active!...
...Kalinsky's book on the great events connected to New York's Madison Sqauare Garden, "Shooting Stars," is just as gorgeous twenty years later! On the cover overleaf, the first words quote You-Know-Who: "As a photographer, Kalinsky is the champ." And the first photo is of the same You-Know-Who receiving flowers after "The Main Event (1974)! There's also a full-page shot of Frank from 1969, and a smaller one from '74's Legendary Moment...
... To me, Earl "The Pearl" was MAGIC, before anyone ever heard of Earvin Johnson...
...and Mark Simone has been one of NY's great radio personalities for over forty years--a worthy successor to William B.
