Marvin Hamlisch

I just heard he passed away at 68 after a brief illness. What a loss. May he rest in peace.

Hugely talented guy, from the Carly Simon Bond theme to The Sting soundtrack, everyone will know a tune or a song he was involved with. Sad news, but what a legacy.

Rest in Peace

Since he was the principal conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Pops, I got to see him frequently as a regular guest on KDKA-TV’s Pittsburgh Today Live morning program to promote the Pops, the latest visit was in June.

Most of the time he would be sitting at a keyboard, noodling around, as he talked about the upcoming season with host (and anchor) Kristine Sorensen. This morning at a little after 9AM when she told us the news I could see that she was upset and trying to control her emotions.

Here is a link to KDKA's story on his passing including a video story from this past January where he teamed up with the Fairmont Pittsburgh Hotel’s Executive Chef Andrew Morrison for a fundraising event.

It is very sad news! Indeed. I saw him perform in Fort Myers twice. First time he told the audience his mother wanted him to get married. Second time, he signed a book for me and told me his Mom was very happy as he was married. Too young to pass. Sleep warm, Marvin.

You always wonder, when an illness takes someone, how much their pending will to live gave in. Some people survive seemingly insurmountable illnesses, and emerge with a strong life force.

How important it is to fully realize what you are living for.
One time on the freeway (95) in bumper to bumper traffic, pushing all the buttons on the radio, I ran across a song on the dirge-rock station with a line "ev-ery-y day is exactly the same..." that grinded on and on incessantly.

Marvin left us with a large and memorable repertoire.

Eunice and I saw him perform at a benefit for a synagogue in Framingham, MA. He was a natural showman -- great talent, very humble, self-deprecating humor -- tons of marvelous stories, as you would expect from someone who worked with Newman, Redford, Barbra, Neil Simon, Sidney Pollack, Michael Bennett!

Amazingly, ALL of the creative talent behind "A Chorus Line" -- Joe Papp, the producer; Michael Bennett, the director-choreographer; Ed Kleban, Nick Dante, and Jim Kirkwood, Jr., the librettists and lyricists; and now, Marvin, the composer--have passed!

Rest In Peace, Marvin, "nobody did it better!"

Marvin Hamlisch

Marvin Hamlish was a musical giant - he worked with many of our favourite singers, and some of those works are among my favourites, such as:

tony bennetts 1977 "One" (from a chorus line) on the sinatra and friends tv show (also sammy davis jr did this number in 1988/89 to introduce liza minnelli on stage during the ultimate event), sammy did a great version of "what i did for love", Hamlisch also helped minnelli create her big kander/ebb medley at the 1987 carnegie hall concerts (they had known each other since they were teenagers and he was rehearsal pianist and she auditioned for broadway), he orchestrated and conducted barbra streisands big 1994 comeback concerts, and wrote "the way we were"... i think the iconic piano piece "the entertainer" is also by him.

Rest in peace, Marvin Hamlisch
