Rest In Peace
She was on Rosie O'Donnell's short lived OWN show late last year to celebrate her birthday and she still had "IT". A true comedy legend and pioneer.

Very sad news- she paved the way for female comics.
Rest in Peace Phyllis.

This is heartbreaking. What a unique individual who earned every thing she ever got. Her autobiography, Like a Lampshade in a Whorehouse, is a terrific read, all her ups and downs, very personal, interspersed with some classic self-deprecating one-liners... "I didn't have a good five minutes... I went straight from baby fat to middle aged spread!"
Rest in peace, m'lady.

Funny Lady
Phyllis and family lived in the St. Louis area for a few years in the mid '60's, and her daughter Sue was in my class at Webster Groves High School.
Phyllis put on a high school assembly for us and didn't change a thing from her night club act. We loved it, but the teachers were not thrilled. At least this was before every comic had to use the f-word. She opened by saying her Maidenform living bra had died.....of starvation. Very funny lady. She also said there were no germs in her kitchen; they all slid to their death down the sink. She hired my girlfriend's mother to sew probably thousands of sequins on a black dress. It took weeks and weeks, but she probably saved a ton of money having a "housewife" do it. Phyllis and the dress were supposed to be on Ed Sullivan, but the dress never made TV. The Diller family lived on a street of big old white frame houses (not far from where Gordon Jenkins grew up), but THEIR house was painted pink. Maybe she was thumbing her nose at the neighbors. |

Farewell Phylliss. Thanks for the laughter, especially THANK YOU for all the USO tours. In 1966, my brother spent his last Christmas in Vietnam. One of his last letters home he told us how much he enjoyed, Bob Hope & Phyllis Diller. I will be forever grateful that you gave him a few moments of laughter in the HELL he had to endure before his death in February, 1967. God Bless you and comfort your family and friends.

Phyills Diller was from Lima, Ohio, which is just 90 minutes from me. My step-brother and step-sister were able to meet her when they were kids when their dad worked for an airline. Their account of her was friendly and charming.

Aw that's sad, may she rest in peace. I always remember her quote "to wake up in the morning with a smile, go to bed with a coat hanger in your mouth"
