Steve Van Buren

I have just learned that NFL legend Steve Van Buren has passed away on August 23, 2012. He was 91 years of age.

Steve Van Buren played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1944 to 1951, and was an All-Pro running back, known by the nickname "Wham-Bam". He was essential on the Eagle teams which won the NFL Championship in 1948 and 1949. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1965.

Rest Well, Steve, for you have earned it, my friend.

I met him on several occasions and to say he was a gentleman would be a huge understatement. He was born in Honduras so he played with the nickname "Hondo" which is what his pals called him...a real treat to have known him.

Born in Honduras? Funny because his last name is 100% Dutch. I don't know much about American Football as it is not on television here. But someone told me that he was one of the best ever..
