I read once that throughout Warren Beatty's long bachelorhood, he lived in two cluttered rooms at the Beverly Hills Hotel. It's so easy to accumulate stuff.

I've thrown away my poppy after all the corporate palaver over the wearing of poppies by the England team. It is unseemly, and does nothing to support our ex-servicemen. It is a bandwagon for the insincere. One hour to 11 November, 11am, I am off to our local British Legion Club to stand alongside our ex-soldiers during the silence. I may or may not make a further contribution during my visit. That doesn't matter, because my presence there will mean more to them than any money I could ever afford to give. It's about people, not poppies or money. Lest we forget.

Veterans Day

Originally called Armistice Day to celebrate the end of WWI, the holiday has transformed into Veterans Day to celebrate the men and women who went off to war and returned from the conflict.
Although we have to remember those who went off to war and didn't make it back, ths day is to celebrate those who went off to war and came back in triumph. It is truly those who came back that we owe the greatness of this nation to. So, thank you, veterans, for making our great nation so great.

I'd like to think this thread is for the ex-servicemen of ALL countries, certainly allied countries. When I visit the British Legion, I don't just see British ex-servicemen, I see soldiers from many countries, especially Poland. But we owe a debt of gratitude to the French Resistance and especially the Gurkhas, who are great friends to the British people. Our wars would be worth nothing if we continued to divide our concerns into the silos we know as countries.

I've spent a few hours at our local British Legion today, and I shared the two minute silence with some old boys who served in many conflicts, especially WWII. I didn't really need to speak to them. It was enough that I was there with them as they teared up about their lost comrades and families. Some like to talk about the war, most don't, but the best thing we can do is offer our ear for those who need that safety-valve. What stories are locked away inside their heads.

But, with all the respect I saw at the British Legion, I also saw humour and comradeship. I certainly didn't see no flags waving about. It's about more than that. Flags send men to war. These men didn't follow the flag. They went to war because there was a clear and evident danger to their families and communities. Bombs were falling on our cities. That's the only reason they signed up. I have never seen an old boy glory in what they did.

Victor Gregg is the kind of man I get to meet, and he's well-funny when he gets going It's always an honour.

Leanne, I intended the thread for all veterans and troops around the world. Perhaps I should have flown all the flags here too. I realize it's not about flags but sometimes a flag is a way to get people to pay attention.

Minneapolis honor Veteran's Day

Minneapolis light up the 35W bridge in red, white and blue this evening. I drove by it and was stunned by it's beauty and reflection off The Mississippi River.

Some may remember that this was the bridge that collapsed a few years ago.

A very impressive presentation and a great way to better understand just what they went though to make the world a better place for the rest of us.
