Christmas With Frank And Bing / Frank Sinatra Calendar

"Happy Holidays with Bing and Frank"

Los Angeles Times, November 8, 2003

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, at least on DVD. Though the yuletide holidays are more than six weeks away, numerous
Christmas-themed TV shows, movies and animated specials have already been released on DVD.

One of the swingingest of the new releases is "Happy Holidays With Bing and Frank" (Hart Sharp, $20), a bizarre but very cool TV special starring Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra that aired in 1957.

Recently restored, this color special was directed by Ol' Blue Eyes himself and finds Sinatra living in one hip bachelor pad that he's decorating for the holidays.

Enter Der Bingle with his latest holiday record in hand and the two start performing some classic holiday tunes like "Jingle Bells." They then decide to join some carolers to bring Christmas cheer to the neighbors.

But here is when the special enters the "Twilight Zone." For no apparent reason, as soon as Frank and Bing join the singers, the whole landscape changes to Victorian-era
London.

The DVD also features commentary from producer William Self, a Q & A session taped at the Museum of Television & Radio with Self and Nancy and Tina Sinatra, some very kitschy public service announcements with
Frank and Bing and examples of Sinatra's painted Christmas cards.

Very nice selection of pics for the 2004 calender. I don't know where they are available but I will find a couple of copies. I agree with 'FrankIsALegend' for 'Best Pic' and for the same reason. Thanks for the calender, Nancy. I hope this tradition continues.

Wow, some great FS pics here and certainly this goes on my gift list. However, some shots also appeared in my previous FS calendars and there are plenty of other pics I can think of that could be used. Next time - I'd like to choose some.

Just got the DVD, and, although I must admit the program is indeed a bit strange, having Bing and Frank sing those songs to us overshadows the green of the pad and eyes. Great to have the Q&A with Bill Self and our two dolls Nancy and Tina. Thanks for including the tuberculosis charity commercial!

Dvd Audio Review

The Rat Pack - ‘The Rat Pack Live at The Villa Venice’
A DVD-Audio review by Stuart M. Robinson

After the overwhelming success of Frank Sinatra’s ‘Sinatra at the Sands’ DVD-Audio disc, Warner’s Reprise label has quickly followed up with a recording that showcases all the members of the legendary 1960’s Rat Pack, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra at their best in a 1962 fundraising cabaret performance captured at The Villa Venice nightclub, located in the outskirts of Chicago.

Both discs are linked via Frank Sinatra, but are also closely related from an historical perspective. I did at first think ol’ blue eyes had included a plug for the ‘Sinatra at the Sands’ title as he mentions his forthcoming “new” album with the Count Basie Orchestra, but that performance was actually recorded four years later in 1966.

The performances on ‘The Rat Pack Live at The Villa Venice’ were recorded during the nights of November 26th to December 2nd 1962 and are brought to us here by the same team as the aforementioned Sinatra DVD-Audio title, mixing engineers (for the surround and stereo versions) Elliot Mazer and Diana Reid Haig together with co-producer Robin Hurley.
