Frank Sinatra Jr. Big Band Review

Frank Sinatra JrPalm Beach, March 04, 2011
A 20-piece orchestra brought back the Big Band Era at Hard Rock Live for the Frank Sinatra Jr. Show on Thursday night.

With the band playing to a slightly older generation, the audience got to experience Big Band sounds and a stroll down memory lane covering an entire almanac of Frank Sinatra’s music.

Frank Sinatra Jr., who for many years was the musical conductor/director for his father, “Old Blue Eyes,” gave the concert attendees a glimpse into his father’s contagious melodies.

The younger Sinatra started out with his own “crooning songs”, like “That Face”, “Love Around The Corner” and “Friend Like Me” from the Disney movie Aladdin. He sang about slowing down and being “too old to worry and to mean to die”.

There was a lot of interaction with the audience as Sinatra began telling the story of his father’s music, which started back in the 1930’s. Sinatra Jr. mentioned musical greats like Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie and other legends of the big band era.

The evening got exciting when Junior began to go into his father’s classic collection of songs, with the audience’s full support and loud applause. Some of the favorites included “Strangers in The Night”, “World On A String”, “Summer Wind” and “Fly Me To The Moon.”

Like his father, Frank Sinatra Jr. charmed the crowd with stories and jokes and the old-fashioned charisma that is missing in today’s concert performances.

The music told stories that could be understood and the melodies mixed jazzy sounds with incredible sax solos from an amazing horn section.

This was a performance that in today’s fast-paced world slows you down and really makes you appreciate the classic music of days gone by.

Frank Sinatra Jr. will be playing the Lyric Theatre in Stuart on Monday and Tuesday.

I probably could have gone to this, if I had been keeping up. Sorry I missed it. And on my birthday, too. Alas.

Frank Sinatra, Jr. is the consummate musician. I've been fortunate enough to see him perform on many occasions dating back to the 1960's. I can tell you that the 2011 edition of his show is a must see for anyone who longs for the days when a prerequisite, for being an entertainer, was to have talent.

Although, Frank Jr.'s talent has always been there, he has refined it and brought it to the zenith, in the art of performance. His showmanship, along with his vocal abilities, are sure to please everyone in attendance.

For fans of the Big Band era, and the Great American Songbook, his show is the kind of entertainment that we long for. It is fair to grant Frank his just due, but as you listen to his vocals, and to his selected material, comparisons to his Dad are inevitable. Those of us who remember his father well, get extremely moved at the similarity, the nuances, the timber of the voice, and Frankie's persona on stage. We so very happy that the tradition continues, and that the "apple doesn't fall far from the tree." Keep up the great work, Frank. We love 'ya!
