A Soldier's Prayer
I ASKED GOD FOR STRENGTH THAT I MIGHT ACHIEVE;
I WAS MADE WEAK THAT I MIGHT LEARN HUMBLY TO OBEY.
I ASKED FOR HEALTH THAT I MIGHT DO GREATER THINGS;
I WAS GIVEN INFIRMITY, THAT I MIGHT DO BETTER THINGS.
I ASKED FOR RICHES, THAT I MIGHT BE HAPPY;
I WAS GIVEN POVERTY, THAT I MIGHT BE WISE.
I ASKED FOR POWER, THAT I MIGHT HAVE THE PRAISE OF MEN;
I WAS GIVEN WEAKNESS, THAT I MIGHT FEEL THE NEED OF GOD.
I ASKED FOR ALL THINGS, THAT I MIGHT ENJOY LIFE;
I WAS GIVEN LIFE, THAT I MIGHT ENJOY ALL THINGS.
I GOT NOTHING THAT I ASKED FOR ---- BUT EVERYTHING I HAD HOPED FOR.
ALMOST DESPITE MYSELF, MY UNSPOKEN PRAYERS WERE ANSWERED.
I AM AMONG ALL MEN, MOST RICHLY BLESSED.
By an unknown soldier.

Nancy,
Thank you for shring this poem with us it is truly inspirational and just goes to show you about life and how what you want may not always be what you need and how in the end you always get something completly different than what you planned but a little better or it seems that way because of the journey. Thanks again it was beautiful.
love,
mistie

Hi Nancy
I have seen this poem before.
It's great.
A lot of people have deep feelings.
It's only when things like this are written down that you remember that others are just like yourself in that way.
Thanks for the reminder.
Lovely.
Barry.

Being from Gerogia, I am very familiar with Max Cleland. He is a fine example of what our nation needs. Thank you for posting this poem. I read it several times and each time so many memories of the days of Viet Nam came flooding back to me. I lost many friends then and only narrowly escaped being sent there myself. It seems so recent, and yet, a world away.

Many thanks for the beautiful poem. So much truth there - which we need to be reminded of.

Dear Nancy,
Truly a beautiful poem. On the eve of the first anniversary of 9/11, most of us are deep in thought about our country and the people in it. We have tried to put behind us the horror of that day but there will be no escaping it tomorrow. Even if no mention of it were made, in our hearts and minds it would prevail. I think a lot about Frank and his love for this country. As we all know, he talked about how he felt about America. God bless America, America the Beautiful. Thanks Nancy.

Dear Nancy,
This poem points out the deceptions of our adversary, the Devil, or Satan. He has blinded the minds of men to keep them from the good things that God has in store for those who love Him. I believe that Frank Sinatra's songs showed that he knew this.
Sincerely,
Weedguy
