    PETER MARINO -- Playing Favorites

“ . . . giving you an opportunity to bid on auction items – like hosting an hour of PLAYING FAVORITES on Siriusly Sinatra! And now Sirius/XM presents this year's winning bidder: One hour of music hand-picked by Sinatra fan Peter Marino.”

Google “Peter Marino” and the first note is for the Wiki bio of a very important American architect who outbid other Sinatra fans at a charity auction – for the chance to host a Playing Favorites show. Just had to come here and express appreciation for his selections.

Mr. Marino took a chronological approach – from the “earliest Sinatra like 'All or Nothing At All' through to his most recent “Don Costa arranged favorite, ALL MY TOMORROWS.”

Recently I switched my allegiance to the 'original' (1959) Nelson Riddle arranged “All My Tomorrows” after Sirius played it immediately following a Sammy Cahn hosted “Chairman's Hour” as “the way its composers Cahn & Van Heusen had envisioned it – a classic mid-tempo swing orchestration. But then . . . just now, listening again the the Don Costa arrangement of a decade later, – I think my favorite orchestral opening (and closing) orchestral flourishes (actually my favorite for ANY Sinatra recording!) – I'm changing back. The Wiki entry on this song has Charles Granata agreeing that the later recording (Costa's name isn't mentioned) is the more inspired.

Thanks, Peter Marino for a most enjoyable program – especially your show-closer (from Frank's MY WAY album). First offering at YouTube this day (with 74,000 'views') is this one:

“When the Lights Go On Again (all over the world) . . .

. . . and the boys are home again, all over the world!”

Tommy James hosting “Playing Favorites” and surprising us all with his special choices!

“Here,” he says in his cheerful 'radio voice' “is one of the most recognized voices in all of popular music: Vaughn Monroe. And it was so heart-felt and poignant – in such a dark and scary time in our history -- a Message of Hope, in World War Two.”

Tommy selects one of my very favorite Sinatra recordings, the studio version of MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT (from the Billy May -arranged “Come Fly With Me” album).

Wonderful selections, Mr. James! Just had to express appreciation for a most enjoyable 'Playing Favorites'.

[First version at YouTube this day – with 100,000 “views” and an evocative “Blitz in London” slide show, plus a note that this recording charted at No. 1 during England's “darkest hour” 1942.]

Mark, I'm not sure if you're aware, but Tommy wrote a book a few years ago about his early career. I haven't read it, but apparently it is an interesting tell-all that includes a connection between Tommy and the Mafia in his younger days.
