Chuck, thank you for the kind words.

I use a Windows PC. I'd be very interested in that program for creating a full discography. I have been hoping to do a sessionography for Nancy as well, but I haven't be able to locate enough details.

  3. Like I do

"Although "Like I Do" was not a commercial success in the U.S., it was a big international hit during 1962 and '63. The May 26, 1962 issue of Billboard reported Top 10 chart positions for "Like I Do" in Italy and South Africa. In early 1963, it was a chart success in Japan. Those charts from 1962 are pictured (left and right), with the February 23, 1963 ad and the original 45 in its company sleeve (center)."

... and 'like I do' peaked at #9 in Holland! (also in 1962)
I know I live in a very small country, probably not important for artists, but I just want to share you this

Matt, according to Billboard's "Hits Of The World," in its September 1, 1962 issue, it charted even higher.

You live in a beautiful country. I'm proud of that chart position and also proud I was able to visit a few years back.

The Dance of the Hours or Like I Do was also made popular by Alan Sherman who sang Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah to the same melody.

So I guess (Dutch) Wikipedia is not always reliable
Anyway I'm proud that Holland was one of the first countries that appreciated Nancy's great music!

Nancy on "Cash Box" U.S. Charts Before "So Long, Babe"

Some of Nancy's early 1960s Reprise singles were big hits internationally. Songs such as "Like I Do," "Think Of Me," and "Tonight You Belong To Me" charted around the world (Belgium, Holland, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, South Africa).

"So Long, Babe" is recognized as Nancy's first U.S. chart record (October 1965). However, in 1962, two of Nancy's pre-Lee Hazlewood singles did appear on Cash Box U.S. charts: Looking Ahead (retail outlets) and Radio Active (airplay).

"Looking Ahead," according to the chart's banner, was "a compilation in order of strength of up and coming records showing signs of breaking into The Cash Box Top 100," apparently Cash Box's version of Billboard's Bubbling Under The Hot 100.

"Radio Active" was described by the March 3, 1962 Cash Box.

Cash Box this week introduces a new feature called the "Radio Active Chart"–a feature designed to indicate which new records key radio stations in every important market throughout the country have added to their play list during the preceding week.

"To Know Him Is To Love Him," Nancy's second U.S. single, was flipped internationally as "Like I Do" would become her biggest pre-"Boots" hit. U.S. Reprise would also flip and reissue the single in February 1963.

Cash Box ad: February 23, 1963

Its original U.S. release had spent two weeks on Cash Box's Looking Ahead chart.

March 10, 1962: #43 "To Know Him Is To Love Him"

March 17, 1962: #41 "To Know Him Is To Love Him"

Although it was the charted A-side in Japan, "Tonight You Belong To Me" was the B-side of "You Can Have Any Boy" in the U.S. according to Billboard's November 17, 1962 review and comments from Reprise's national promo director Ernie Farrell in Cash Box's November 24, 1962 "Record Ramblings" column.

Reprise's Ernie Farrell buzzes that there's been instant response to Nancy Sinatra's latest, "You Can Have Any Boy."
In the U.S., the "Tonight You Belong To Me" side received significant radio airplay as it appeared on Cash Box's Radio Active Chart (December 1, 1962).

Since "So Long, Babe," in terms of U.S. Billboard entries on the Hot 100, Top 40 Easy Listening, Bubbling Under The Hot 100, and Hot Country Singles, plus "Summer Wine's" recent appearance on Billboard's TV commercials chart, Nancy has achieved thirty-seven Billboard U.S. chart singles.

The UK 45 release of Like I Do is extremely difficult to find.

It was a hit over here for former Embassy session singer Maureen Evans, which was a fairly faithful cover but completely missed out the "Johnny boy, take it slow...." (etc) introduction. The B side was an excellent cover of Linda Scott's Starlight Starbright.

Here are the UK 45 (Reprise R.20045) and a clip of Nancy's recording of "Like I Do" with the "Johnny boy..." intro:

Interestingly, the Japanese covers are faithful to Nancy's original by including the intro, as heard in these excerpts of The Peanuts' 1962 version and Golden Half's 1971 interpretation:

  18. This melody was actually The Dance of the Hours by Amilcare Ponchielli’s in the opera La gioconda and later in Disney's Fantasia. It was also presented with funny lyrics by Alan Sherman as Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah.
